What is an Action Log?
A project action log is a place where all the tasks of your team are recorded. It consolidates all actions from meetings, phone calls, and more.
It will save you the time of switching between emails, meetings, and your notebook to keep track of all the tasks that you have to complete – and those that your team members or suppliers have promised to complete as part the project.
It is distinct from your project schedule because it covers the more complex, deliverable-based work. The action log is the central location for all other tasks and To Dos that arise daily on the project.
The action log I use to keep track of my actions is a simple spreadsheet.
How do I use the Action Log to track project tasks
I copy and paste actions from conference call, team meetings, and any other conversations into this. When I’m talking to someone, I can filter it by task owners or workstream leads.
It’s easy to filter out closed tasks without having them deleted. It’s the best way for me to keep track of everything I need to do and what others should be doing.

How to Use the Action Log Template
This is your To Do List.
You can record the task, who is responsible and the most recent updates. You can add updates as needed, so you have a complete history of the work being done.
I enjoy logging tasks that others are responsible for. As a project manager, my responsibility is to check in with others and make sure they are doing the right work.
Transparency is one way to get others to take responsibility for your work.
It is difficult for others to claim that they didn’t take away an action from the previous meeting by writing it down and sharing it before each meeting.
In the video below, I discuss how to use an Action Log for meeting action tracking and project managing.
How to write an action item
As you can see, it is best to start your action item using a verb.
Create a slide deck
Examine the proposal from Finance
Circulate vendor agreement
