My journey so far: How I got into Project Management – Prothoughts

This article is a reflection of my professional experience and how I got involved with Project Management. After completing my Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Nagpur University I moved to the USA to pursue my Master’s in Operations Research at Virginia Tech. While completing my degree, I worked as a data analyst at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute.
After graduating from VT (Go Hokies), my first job was with Vertex and then with CSC. I worked with multiple clients, including Procter & Gamble. CSC also had Visa, Farmers Insurance, Visa, Guardian Life Insurance. They were involved in multiple phases of different projects with different capabilities. This is when I realized the many ways Project Managers handled projects in different circumstances. I was able to discern the right and wrong ways of doing things. I was able to understand my own understanding and, once I had been in similar roles, began applying the knowledge and experience gained at work. I tried to make sure that everything worked out for me and the project. This is what an experienced person would do – what we can do.
It was then that I realized that sometimes things don’t always go as planned. We must follow certain processes and standards that go beyond those required by law and fix any mistakes.
The question was: What should we do? Instead of what we can.
How to identify what is missing and what should be corrected. I found the PMP certification. After doing some research, I discovered that this certification was a must-have for me, but it requires effort, time, and commitment. It was something I was ready to do, but then there was a twist. We decided to move back to India after a decade due to personal reasons. This meant that the PMP plan had to be put on hold for a while.
I returned to India and worked as a CSC employee from Bangalore. I was offered a job at Accenture, Pune. Accenture settled me in Pune and I began to pursue my old goal – PMP certification. It took me about 2 to 3 months to prepare for and pass the PMP. Those three months were when I realized all the things I had been doing wrong or not doing right all these years. There was much to learn and correct. Accenture promoted me, but I didn’t want to limit the application of what PMP taught to me on one project or one company.
I began to look for ways to use this knowledge in a more powerful and impactful manner. ProThoughts Solutions was one of the great options that I found when I started looking. It was perfect for me and gave me the platform I needed. I was compelled to move on without a second thought. That’s how I ended up with this organization over the last few years. Every day brings new challenges and new opportunities. As a trainer, mentor, director, and many other roles simultaneously. That is what I was looking to do: Use my knowledge without limitations to succeed.
Since joining ProThoughts Solutions, our organization has worked towards a single goal: To make you succeed with your projects. We provide solutions for all Project Management problems. My journey continues with a great team.
